What is the YoLink Contact Sensor?

The YoLink Contact Sensor is an outdoor wireless smart contact monitoring device that can monitor the opened or closed status of doors, windows, and gates, as well as the status of relays and contact closure outputs on non-smart devices and equipment.

How does the YoLink Contact Sensor work?

The sensor works by using attached magnetic contacts or by connecting to existing or new door/window contacts. The opened/closed status is displayed on the YoLink app, and the status can be used to trigger custom automations or initiate smartphone alerts and notifications based on your preferences.

Can the YoLink Contact Sensor be used outdoors?

Yes, the YoLink Contact Sensor is designed for outdoor use and has an IP rating of IP63, which means it is dust-tight and can resist water spray at a 60-degree angle.

Can I set up different notifications for different sensors?

Yes, you can customize notifications and alerts for each YoLink Contact Sensor within the YoLink app. This allows you to have different settings for various doors, windows, gates, or non-smart devices and equipment that you are monitoring.

Can YoLink contact sensors be used on metal doors?

Yes, YoLink contact sensors can be used on metal doors. However, please note that the presence of metal may impact the communication range between the sensor and the hub.

Can I use the YoLink Contact Sensor indoors as well?

Yes, the YoLink Contact Sensor can be used both indoors and outdoors, as its IP63 rating makes it suitable for various environments.

What is the range of the YoLink Contact Sensor?

The YoLink Contact Sensor has a long-range wireless communication capability, with a typical range of up to 1,000 feet (300 meters) in an open area. The actual range may vary depending on the environment, obstructions, and other factors.

How does door or window monitoring work with the YoLink Contact Sensor?

Door or window monitoring works by installing the magnet on the door or window (moving part) and the reed switch on the frame (fixed part). When the door or window is closed, the magnet is adjacent to the reed switch. As the gap between the magnet and the reed switch increases (when the door or window is opened), the sensor indicates that the door or window is now open.

Will using contact sensors on something that is normally open have any negative effects?

There are no negative effects when using contact sensors on something that is normally open. However, to optimize your sensor's performance and battery life, you should set an appropriate open reminder duration or disable the open reminder feature directly in the YoLink app.

What is the Open Reminder feature?

The Open Reminder feature can alert you when a door, window, gate, or connected device has been left open for too long.

I need an alert to be triggered when the doors are left open for 60 seconds or longer, but I don't need open/close alerts. How can I do this?

To set up this type of alert, you can disable the standard open/close alerts and enable the "Open Reminder" feature in the YoLink App.

How can I use the YoLink Contact Sensor to monitor contact closure outputs on non-smart devices and equipment?

To monitor contact closure outputs, remove the included magnetic contacts and connect the cable to a contact closure type output. The sensor can then monitor the open/closed status of non-smart devices and equipment, with the open status typically representing a warning and the closed status representing normal monitoring.

Can I share access to my YoLink Contact Sensor with other users?

Yes, you can share access to your YoLink Contact Sensor with other users by inviting them through the YoLink app. They will need to have their own YoLink account and the app installed on their smartphone to accept the invitation and gain access to the sensor.

Why isn't there an "Open Reminder" choice in the Alexa routine?

In the Alexa routine, you'll find the "door open" option, which covers both door open and open reminder events. While there isn't a separate "Open Reminder" choice, selecting the "door open" option will enable you to create routines that include both door open and open reminder notifications.

Is the contact sensor compatible with Google Assistant?

Yes, the YoLink Contact Sensor is compatible with Google Assistant. You can use Google Assistant to inquire about the status of your contact sensor by asking questions like, "What's the status of [device name]?" or "Is the [device name] open?"

However, due to Google's limitations, the YoLink Contact Sensor does not support the creation of routines within the Google Home app. For more advanced integration and automation, you can utilize the YoLink Contact Sensor with Alexa routines or IFTTT applets.

Does the "door is still open" option for the YoLink Contact Sensor support IFTTT?

Currently, IFTTT does not support the "door is still open" option for the YoLink Door Sensor.

Does the YoLink Contact Sensor use a normally-closed (NC) reed switch?

No, the YoLink Contact Sensor utilizes a normally-open (NO) reed switch.

Troubleshooting: In the app, my YoLink contact sensor shows the door is open even though I closed it. Is there a workaround for this issue?

Please follow these steps to troubleshoot the issue:

1. Verify the network status of the YoLink Hub to ensure it's online.

2. Check the contact sensor as follows:

a) Press the SET button on the contact sensor and observe if the LED indicator blinks.

b) If there's no light, the contact sensor battery might be dead or low on power. Please replace the battery in this case.

c) Check the YoLink app to see if the device status changes or if the device is online.

d) If there is light, perform factory reset to test.

3. Assess the communication environment between the contact sensor and the YoLink Hub:

a)The distance between the contact sensor and the Hub

b)Are there any obstacles between the contact sensor and the Hub

c)Avoid placing the contact sensor in semi-closed or restricted areas such as underground wells or pits, as this can impact signal strength.

If the problem persists after trying the above steps, please contact YoLink customer support for further assistance.

Why do the text messages for the contact sensor only notify me when the door is open and not when it's closed? How do I receive text messages for both open and closed door events?

The SMS notifications for contact sensors are designed to minimize the number of notifications and associated costs from mobile carriers. By default, the SMS notifications only send an alert when the door is opened. However, you can create an automation in the YoLink app to receive notifications when the door is closed. To do this, set up the automation with the condition "When door is closed," then add the behavior "Notification" and choose the strategy that has enabled SMS notifications. This way, you'll receive text messages for both open and closed door events.

What is the maximum number of Responders I can pair with a YoLink Contact Sensor?

With YoLink Control, there is no strict limit to the number of Responders you can pair with Contact Sensor. However, for optimal performance, we recommend linking no more than 128 devices.

The reporting of status changes is experiencing delays in Google Home. What should I do?

These delays stem from Google Home itself. We inform both the Alexa server and the GA server that the processing speed is relatively consistent. This feature is recently supported by GA and may undergo further optimization.

I don't always get an alert when my mail arrives because the mail carrier opens and closes the door very quickly, sometimes within 1 or 2 seconds. Can I change the sensitivity to ensure I get notified even if the door is open for less than a second?

While you may not be able to change the sensitivity of the door sensor itself, you can create an automation in the YoLink app to ensure you receive a notification for quick open and close events. To do this, follow these steps in the YoLink App:

1. Go to the "Smart" tab.

2. Select "Automation."

3. Create a new automation with the following conditions:

a. When the door is opened,

b. Delay for 3 seconds,

c. Continue only if the door sensor is closed.

4. Add the behavior "Notification" with custom content such as "Door is closed."

By setting up this automation, you should receive a notification even if the door is opened and closed very quickly.

I mounted the sensor on a mailbox, but it does not seem to be working. How do I resolve this?

It's possible that the metal mailbox or your home's metal structure is affecting the connection range between the sensor and the hub. To resolve this issue, try the following steps:

1. Relocate the hub to a window facing the mailbox, ensuring there are no major obstructions between the two devices.

2. If possible, move the sensor about 6 inches away from the mailbox, for example, onto a plastic newspaper box, to reduce interference from the metal mailbox.

3. Check the battery level of the sensor and replace the batteries if necessary.

4. Test the sensor's functionality by opening and closing the mailbox, and verify that the status is correctly displayed in the YoLink app.

If the issue persists, please contact the YoLink Customer Support for further assistance.

I purchased the outdoor contact sensor for use on a gate, but I need to span a slightly larger gap than the magnets provided allow. Could I use stronger magnets?

While YoLink does not provide stronger magnets, you can purchase stronger magnets from other sources online. Keep in mind that a much stronger magnet might affect the sensor's signal, so it is recommended to install the sensor a bit farther away from the reed switch to minimize interference. When selecting a stronger magnet, ensure that it is weather-resistant and suitable for outdoor use. Additionally, test the new magnet's functionality with the contact sensor to confirm that it correctly registers the gate as closed even with a larger gap.

What is the maximum gap between the YoLink contact sensor and the magnet?

For the YoLink YS7707 contact sensor, the maximum working gap between the sensor and the magnet is 0.7 inches (approximately 10mm). If the sensor is mounted on a metal surface, this gap may be reduced. To maintain the optimal gap, you can use plastic spacers or a stronger magnet.
