The Bulldog Valve Robot is a bolt-on motorized operator (also referred to as a "manipulator") for standard metal quarter-turn ball valves. The smart, wireless, Valve Controller 2 includes the features of the Valve Controller 1, with additional power configurations. The included plug-in AC/DC adapter allows for AC-only, AC with backup batteries, and batteries-only configurations. Optional items, selected below, include Water Leak Sensor 1 sensors (model YS7903) and hubs (YoLink Hub, model YS1603 or the SpeakerHub, model YS1604). The Bulldog Valve Robot is our most popular bolt-on valve product, thanks to its ease of installation. I have wanted to install a leak detection system for years that would alert me when I'm away from home. I was a bit skeptical but this system REALLY WORKS and is easy to install. I have 23 locations in my home protected with sensors and it works perfectly. We have got into the habit of turning off the water supply when we're away on vacation and the Bulldog Valve makes that easy to do now. I even installed three leak detectors in the air handler drip pans on my HVAC system to get a early warning if the drain gets plugged. I highly recommend this product.
Bulldog Valve Robot & Smart Water Valve Controller 2, with Plug-In Power Supply, HUB REQUIRED!
The product is very easy to install and configure. However I do have some feedback, perhaps in the product development area:
1. Would be nice to have the ability to control the device with a manual switch integrated into the controller. That is, perhaps a button to open and close the controller arm. The equivalent product from Dome has this feature.
2. I’m curious as to which YoLink smart switch is compatible with the Smart Water Valve Controller 2
3. I’d like to see a smart switch product designed to the form factor of a Decora switch….to the form factor of the Lutron Pico switch. In other words to that the device can be operated remotely on site without the need for using the SmartPhone app.
4. Consider having a mounting plate type device, aside from the supplied pipe clamps. My situation is that for my installations there is not enough plumbing pipe to utilize the clamps.So I’ve had to fabricate a mounting platform, and use angle aluminum strips to create a platform type mount.
Again, I like the product, and the ease of configuration. So far have purchased 4 units, with 3 installed so far.
I connected 9 water sensors and 2 gate sensors they all are working great.
Having water leak sensors is nice. That they sound an alarm or send an alert to your phone is also nice. However, if you're out of the house or on vacation far from home when a leak event happens, what good is it to you? There's potentially going to be lots of water damage if a toilet or sink hose bursts and the water is freely flowing, even for a few minutes. With this shutoff robot, the water flow can be cutoff in under 10 seconds...even if you lose your internet connection. This is a DIY kit, and can be up and running in under 30 minutes. Just a matter of positioning it, a few screws, and some testing - you're done!
I like this model of the controller specifically because it uses electric and then battery for backup. I'm sure the other models with only batteries are good, but, with my luck, the batteries would be drained at that critical moment when the shutoff is needed. I just installed mine, and at this time, I have it plugged in to a UPS, to provide even further protection should the power go out. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to leave it that way, or it is overkill.
YoLink provides the best solution with their LoRa technology - because it does not depend on the internet or wifi being available and the communication is going to work, even if you have a large house or devices are in locations with floors and walls between them. We have a larger home, with water heater, sump pumps, well tank, water softener, crawl space, washing machine all located in the basement where there is potential for a water leak event and weak wifi signal. The LoRa signal is strong everywhere.
Before purchasing this product, if you've rarely used your shutoff valve, you should check that it does freely turn to open/close. If it's in a basement, hasn't been used in a while, and there's possibly rust buildup, you may want to go at it with a wire brush and some WD-40 to loosen it up first. That's what I had to do with mine before feeling it was working well enough to purchase this product.
I really like this DIY/robot solution for a number of reasons:
- It is DIY, no plumber needed. I installed mine in about 15 minutes.
- It isn't making a permanent change to your plumbing like the inline valve product. If you sell your home and move, you can easily take this one with you. Someone who buys your home might not want/like the inline valve solution, which is permanent.
In any case, I really like this shutoff valve robot. With numerous water leak sensors distributed around the house, I really feel protected and that the one time expense is well worth it.
